Do you want to explore a unique cultural tradition that is still untouched by the modernity? You should go on the Upper Mustang Trek if you want to experience such wonderful lifestyle. This restricted region trek in the Himalaya of Nepal is certainly a once in a lifetime adventure. While you are on the adventure, you will love the entire experience throughout the region.

The Kingdom of Lo, now Upper Mustang, is a place of unique culture and civilization. The region still has the wonders of unique cultural traditions that you will find amazingly beautiful. It is not only the cultural wonders but also the trekking adventure in the region is an amazing experience. Trekking through the deserted landscape of the mountains has a wonderful charm. The grey mountains, jagged cliffs, oasis like settlements, and high passes along the trail make the trip a beautiful adventure.

Starting right from Jomsom, you will explore the amazing surroundings through all the way to Lo Manthang. Beautiful settlements along the trail also give us incredible cultural experience of the region. Although you need a special permit to go on Upper Mustang Trek, the experience is certainly worth it. You will pay USD 500 per person to trek 10 days in the region. It feels a little expensive but you are looking forward to indulging in an experience that you will treasure for life.

Itinerary 

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (Max. Altitude: 1,400m)

  • Airport pickup and hotel transfer

  • Trip briefing session

Day 02: Kathmandu to Pokhara drive (Max. Altitude: 1,400m)

  • Scenic 7-hour drive (200 km) west of Kathmandu

  • Explore lakeside and relax by Phewa Lake

Day 04: Fly From Pokhara to Jomsom & Trek to Kagbeni (Max. Altitude: 2,804m)

  • Spectacular morning flight to Jomsom with Annapurna & Dhaulagiri views

  • Begin trek through Kali Gandaki valley to Kagbeni (~4 hrs)

Day 05: Kagbeni to Chhuksang (Max. Altitude: 2,900m)

  • Trek via Tangbe village with chhortens and narrow alleys

  • Reach Chhuksang, a traditional Thakali village

Day 06: Chhuksang to Samar (Max. Altitude: 3,150m)

  • Pass through Chele village, cross a small pass

  • Overnight in Samar, a picturesque settlement

Day 07: Samar to Geling (Max. Altitude: 3,510m)

  • Trek to Geling village, with villages becoming sparser at higher altitudes.

  • Pass through Syangmochen, known for its religious monuments.

  • Overnight stay in Geling, a small scenic settlement serving as a trekking camp.

Day 08: Geling to Ghami (Max. Altitude: 3,490m)

  • Trek to Ghami village, approximately 5 hours of walking.

  • Pass through stunning mountain landscapes and jagged cliffs.

  • Cross the Nyi La Pass (3,840m) before descending to Ghami.

  • Explore Ghami, a village rich in cultural traditions.

Day 09: Ghami to Charang (Max. Altitude: 3,620m)

  • Trek to Charang village (approximately 5 hours), considered the toughest day of the trek.

  • Trail involves a steep climb followed by a slight descent toward the village.

  • Arrive at Charang with beautiful surroundings and afternoon free to explore.

Day 10: Charang to Lo Manthang  (Max. Altitude: 3,840m)

  • Trek from Charang to Lo Manthang, the final destination, in approximately 3 hours.

  • Arrive at the walled city of Upper Mustang, the capital of the Kingdom of Lo and a regional cultural hub.

  • Plenty of time in the afternoon to explore and enjoy the city’s unique charm.

Day 11: Explore Lo Manthang (Max. Altitude: 3,840m)

  • Full-day exploration of Lo Manthang and its surroundings.

  • Discover ancient cultural wonders, including gompas, the royal palace, and village life.

  • Experience the simplicity and happiness of local people and the rich cultural heritage of Upper Mustang.

Day 12: Lo Manthang to Ghami (Max. Altitude: 3,840m)

  • Trek back from Lo Manthang to Ghami village for overnight stay.

  • Long day of trekking, but descending to lower elevation makes the walk easier.

Day 13: Ghami to Chhuksang (Max. Altitude: 3,490m)

  • Retrace trail through arid Mustang landscapes

  • Overnight at Chhuksang village

Day 14: Chhuskang to Muktinath (Max. Altitude: 3,790m)

  • Trek to Muktinath, taking the route directly to the sacred site instead of Jomsom.

  • Muktinath is a spiritual and sacred site visited by thousands of pilgrims annually.

  • Explore and experience the spiritual energy and cultural significance of the place.

Day 15: Muktinath to Jomsom (Max. Altitude: 3,790m)

  • Final day of the Upper Mustang trek, trekking to Jomsom via Kagbeni along the Kali Gandaki River valley.

  • Enjoy dramatic landscapes of the valley and surrounding mountains.

  • Overnight stay in Jomsom, a small and scenic mountain town.

Day 15: Jomsom to Pokhara flight (Max. Altitude: 2,740m)

  • Fly to Pokhara in the morning, enjoying a scenic 20-minute flight along the Kali Gandaki Gorge with breathtaking Annapurna mountain views.

  • Relax and unwind in Pokhara: stroll by the lakeside, enjoy good food and drinks, get a massage, and take a well-deserved break after the trek.

Day 17: Pokhara to Kathmandu (Max. Altitude: 1,400m)

  • Drive back to Kathmandu, approximately 7 hours along the highway, or optionally fly back in 25 minutes for an extra cost.

  • Leisure time in Kathmandu to relax and explore upon arrival.

Day 18: Departure Day

  • End of trip unless extended

  • Airport transfer for onward journey
